Dr n. med. Antoni Pyrkosz

Graduate of the Silesian Medical University (1982), pediatrician, specialist in neonatology, clinical genetics and medical laboratory genetics. Since 1982, he takes up work with secondment from the basic units of employment – ZOZ, and WZOZMDziM to the Department of Neonatal Pathology of the Silesian Center for Pediatrics, obtaining specialization in pediatrics and neonatology. Since 01.10.1989, he is admitted to the scientific and didactic staff of first the Silesian Medical Academy, and then the Silesian Medical University – until 30.09.2015. – successively in the positions of assistant, to assistant professor in the Department of Genetics and, after the change, the Department of General Molecular Biology and Genetics. He taught Polish students in the field of medical genetics (even before becoming a full-time employee of the university – since 1986) and, since 1998, English-speaking students, being a co-author of this curriculum.

He began his work in genetic counseling in January 1983. – i.e. since the establishment of the first genetic counseling center, in the Katowice province at that time, of which he was a co-initiator and co-organizer, as well as the Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children in Zabrze (1993), where in the first period of activity he served as the center’s substantive consultant. He continues to work at the Genetic Clinic of the GCZD in Katowice from 2001 to 2015. Since 01.X.2015, he moves to the University of Rzeszów at the Faculty of Medicine and the newly established medical faculty, working at the Genetic Outpatient Clinic in Rzeszów.

He was a co-founder of the Silesian Branch – Polish Society of Genetics – 1988. He was also a founding member of the national Section of Congenital Metabolic Defects – Polish Pediatric Society – holding various positions, including on the National Review Committee and member of the Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Team – Polish Registry of Congenital Malformations for Clinical Genetics – since 2001. From 1999 to 2010 he was a member of the Committee on Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences: Committee of Cellular and Molecular Pathology of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. He was also elected to the national authorities of the Polish Society of Human Genetics, as a Member of the Fellow Court – from 2006 to 2010. From 2002 to 2015, he served as the Regional Consultant for Clinical Genetics of the Silesian Province. He also had and has membership in several Scientific Societies (PTP, PTN, PTG, PTGCz), and was a member of the European Society of Human Genetics.

In addition, he was appointed as – a member of the Expert Team for the development of a new specialization program in Clinical Genetics – as a representative of the National Consultant (2013), and is also a member of the State Examination Commission in Clinical Genetics (2010) and Medical Laboratory Genetics (2015).
